The Canal District - UE5

Hello! I’m excited to share my final Master’s project from Bournemouth University, a modular real-time 3D environment created in Unreal Engine 5. It draws inspiration from the stunning concept art of Eddie Mendoza, as well as landscapes from my hometown.

I was responsible for all aspects of the production, from modeling and texturing to lighting and rendering, except for the foliage assets, which were sourced from Quixel Bridge. My focus was on creating a captivating atmosphere with an emphasis on realism, assisted by William Faucher's Easy Fog, Easy Atmos, and Easy Mapper tools. For the final environment, I utilized a range of workflows: nanite meshes for the hero assets to capture as much detail as possible, and low- to mid-poly assets with trim sheet textures for optimized performance. This project also pushed me to learn Substance Designer for the first time. Creating materials in Designer allowed me to fine-tune the look of the environment exactly as I envisioned and really helped push the realism of my textures. Using this workflow, I created the roof tiles, stone walls and bridge, wall plaster, and wood materials.

Breakdown of the project is coming soon, so stay tuned!

Special thank you to all the teachers and mentors on my course at Bournemouth University for giving me guidance and feedback all throughout this project.
